upstateNYpc housing + transportation affordability
April 5, 2010
Living in an established, walkable town is not only more sustainable than living in the burbs, it’s often better for your wallet too. In upstate NY, when transportation costs are considered along with housing costs, it becomes even more clear. Here is a pair of maps for the Syracuse metro area that was posted to the Preservation
Association of Central NY listserv:

Housing costs alone are on the left; housing + transportation costs are on the right. The dark blue area in the map on the right is where housing and transportation costs exceed 45% of the average household’s income.
