Sustainability Education Program in Redwood, NY
More information and application available here:
http://www.betterfarm.org/sustainability-education/
Better Farm’s Sustainability Education Program is a hands-on immersive, introductory crash-course in sustainability initiatives.
Instead of a traditional working farm with acres upon acres of one or a few different crops, Better Farm has several gardens demonstrating different styles of gardening and farming. These gardens demonstrate the need for diversity of crops instead of monocultures. Better Farm equips students with a variety of solutions to real-world agricultural issues, including small spaces, temperamental soils, pests, and climate change. The aquaponics, hydroponics, layered gardens, fruit orchard, and forests on the property are extremely varied so students coming from all over the world will learn practical tools that can be applied back home.
The Sustainability Education Program runs in one- to three-month intervals. Those attending receive daily assignments and chores all related to sustainability initiatives and organic farming, as well as the opportunity to design and implement projects on their own. Upon completion of all units and responsibilities, participants will receive a certificate from Better Farm. College students may additionally receive course credit for completion of Better Farm’s Sustainability Education Program.
Individuals are immersed from day one in the local culture while working alongside other residents at Better Farm and in the Redwood community. Also staying at Better Farm are staff members and artists visiting through the betterArts residency program. Individuals should be prepared to take on solo work as well as group efforts; ranging from mundane tasks to unusual, exciting projects.
Many sustainability specialists visit Better Farm throughout the year to offer mentoring and guidance to students interested in coming here to work and gain valuable experience. Additionally, individuals have the option of taking any workshops and participating in any excursions or field trips scheduled during their time at Better Farm.
Students live communally in bunk rooms in Better Farm’s main house.

WATCH “INHABIT” FILM TRAILER: http://fingerlakespermaculture.org/?p=3495
Ten years ago in the Northeast one could barely find a permaculture class, much less a site that demonstrated permaculture principles and techniques in action. Today there is a very different story emerging, and examples abound of permaculture applied to farms, gardens, urban environments, social systems, and more.
In 2013, filmmakers Costa Boutsikaris and Emmett Brennan took a journey around the northeast and midwest U.S. and combined their eye for beauty with their passionate interest in permaculture to create a feature length documentary: INHABIT.
The film presents a vast array of projects, concepts, and people translating the diversity of permaculture expressions into a message easily understood by an equally diverse audience. To those familiar with permaculture, it will be a call to action and a glimpse into what’s possible; what kind of projects and solutions are already underway. For those unfamiliar, it will be an introduction to a new way of being and a new way of relating to the Earth. For everyone, it will be a reminder that humans are capable of being planetary healing forces.
INHABIT will be screening at the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival (FLEFF) in Ithaca, New York on Thursday, April 9th. The FLEFF Festival embraces and interrogates sustainability across all of its forms: economic, social, ecological, political, cultural, technological, and aesthetic. This year their theme is HABITATS. “Environments inhabited by animals, plants, organisms, minerals, fungi, bacteria. Terrains, waters, atmospheres defined by layers, relationships, and complexities surrounding the human and the nonhuman. Ecological systems offering sustenance and life.”
The event is co-sponsored by the Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute (FLPCI) and includes a segment with their cofounder Steve Gabriel, who maintains Wellspring Forest Farm alongside his wife Elizabeth in Mecklenburg NY, where they produce maple syrup, mushrooms, and raise ducks and sheep, while seeking to restore the landscape to a healthy state. Steve–along with Ken Mudge of Cornell University–is also the author of “Farming the Woods” a book recently published by Chelsea Green Press. After the film, join them along with Director Costa Boutsikaris and FLPCI Board Member Becky Sims for a post film discussion about permaculture and related projects and events in the Finger Lakes Region.

Permaculture Intern(s) Sought in NY’s Finger Lakes Region
Would you like to learn and work on a young and growing woodland farm? We invite you to experience and assist Cayuta Sun Farm’s development. In the upcoming year stacks of shiitake mushroom logs, flocks of chicken, a small herd of pigs, and numerous gardens will require committed care and attention. Additionally, we are busy with design and construction projects, landscape assessment, brush clearing, pasture-management, plantings, cultivation and the unexpected challenges of building a farm. Twice during summer the farm will host educational events with the Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute. All these tasks need competent help.
This work can be an opportunity for the right person(s) who wish to augment their permaculture studies with hands-on work. We are lucky to be located in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of New York in a community that values and encourages small, innovative, and sustainable farms. We love our thriving local scene of permaculture practitioners; if you are a hard-working and thoughtful student of ecological design you may also. Aquaponics
Aquaponics is one of the most sustainable and productive farming systems in the world. It combines Aquaculture and Hydroponics to create more self-sufficient, closed-loop, systems that use only a fraction of the water, labor, energy, etc. that other methods use.
Permaculture
Permaculture is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally and culturally productive systems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems.
Aquaponics + Permaculture
When the whole systems design science of Permaculture is combined with the practice of Aquaponics a whole new science is created.

We Are Nature, Working: Lessons from Ecology for Social Structure Design
Evening talk & discussion with Dave Jacke and Patty Love
Nature operates based on a set of foundational laws and principles by which all systems must abide, or they fail. The principles underlying the social structures of natural ecosystems can teach us much about organizing human societies. We can design systems that minimize stress and competition, and maximize cooperation, harmony, productivity, and diversity, while allowing each community member to remain true to their intrinsic nature. Social and economic justice and cooperation are actually more Darwinian than most people think! This evening workshop will begin by getting into some ecological nitty gritty. We’ll then explore together how the design of Rochester’s public food forest project, Lots of Food, a program of Seeking Common Ground, Inc., embodies ecological principles and how it might more fully express them.
Saturday, January 31, 7-9 pm $5-40 suggested contribution, no one will be turned away for lack funds.

Ecological By Design: Honing and Deepening Our Design Processes
One-Day Workshop with Dave Jacke
Our current mainstream culture unjustly damages ecosystems and people, leading to unsustainability. We humans need to rapidly redesign our lifeways and thinking—our culture. We all design all the time – whether we know it or not. By learning to design our cultures consciously and skillfully, we can co-create a resilient future for ourselves, humanity, and the planet.
In this one-day class we will dig deeply into design process theory and practice. We’ll experience effective observation, awareness, and thinking tools that deepen our design skills and our self-understanding. Through lectures, discussions, experiential design exercises, and more, we’ll hone, clarify, and deepen our ability to design thriving ecological and cultural systems. This work can reframe your sense of who and what humans are, what is our ecological role, how humans can inhabit nature, and how nature lives within and through us.
Participants should bring a sketchbook, notepad or other firm drawing surface and paper, some favorite sketching tools (ink or graphite) with at least one fine point and one broad tip pencil or marker, and, if you have it, a copy of Edible Forest Gardens volume 2.
Sunday, February 1, 9:30-4:00 (BYO lunch; tea & coffee provided) $60-100 sliding scale fee, some scholarships available upon request
Pre-registration for Sunday is required!
